A visit to Rhandir Mwyn to see the latest housing development
Adra, a leading housing association in north Wales, welcomed a delegation from Gwynedd Council last week to see how old allotments have been transformed to create a new housing development.
Adra with the contractor DU Construction has been developing 17 new modern homes on the Rhandir Mwyn estate, near Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen in Caernarfon.
The development includes a mix of intermediate rent and social rent housing for local people, with the new residents having already moved into their new homes.
Iwan Trefor Jones, Chief Executive of Adra, said: “We are very proud of the development in Caernarfon, due to the fact that we are able to provide quality homes for local residents.
“There is so much demand for affordable housing in Gwynedd, which reflects the national housing crisis. We have made a firm commitment in our Corporate Plan to build brand new, high quality homes that people can be proud of, that are energy efficient and affordable in terms of rent and heating costs.
This development is part of a partnership between Cyngor Gwynedd and Housing Associations as part of Gwynedd’s Affordable Housing Development Programme. The plan was funded by the Welsh Government through Cyngor Gwynedd’s Social Housing Grant.
Councillor Craig ab Iago, Cyngor Gwynedd’s Housing and Property Cabinet Member, added:
“Considering the urgent need for affordable housing throughout the County, the Council has set a goal for 700 social housing to be built through Gwynedd over the next few years. It is therefore encouraging news that news that 17 additional houses are now long-term homes for people in Caernarfon, and takes us one step closer to realising our ambition.
“It is a known fact that there is a serious housing crisis in Gwynedd, however, the strong relationship we have with our housing partners such as Adra means that we can work together to alleviate the effects of this crisis for the residents of Gwynedd.
“Together, we can ensure that more affordable, high quality, energy efficient housing becomes available to local people in their own communities.”
