Tŷ Gwyrddfai welcomes pupils from Castell Alun High School, Flintshire

Tŷ Gwyrddfai, the first decarbonisation hub in the UK opened its doors to 61 pupils from a Flintshire High School this week. The aim of the event was to introduce school children to possible careers paths in green skills and construction jobs.  Bangor University, one of Tŷ Gwyrddfai’s partners and a number of Tŷ Gwyrddfai sponsors took part in this eye-opening event on the 13th of February at Tŷ Gwyrddfai, Penygroes.

The event provided a valuable experience for the 61 pupils, who travelled across north Wales to attend. By attending 5 different taster sessions, it provided them the opportunity to engage in classroom based and hands on activities related to decarbonisation and green skills.

These sessions covered various aspects of green and construction jobs, allowing students to gain hands-on experience and meet potential employers in the sector. The sponsors were Altro, Nuaire, Saint Gobain and Travis Perkins. Dr Simon Curling from Bangor University, introduced their onsite research facility and explained why the construction industry needs to adapt to climate change. This unique opportunity for north Wales highlights the region’s dedication to fostering sustainable careers.

Amanda Heath, who organised the trip for the school said

“Here at Castell Alun we were very excited to have the opportunity to bring

GCSE students to the decarbonisation hub.  This event will hopefully inspire them to look at potential career opportunities in green skills and sustainable construction.

This interactive STEM event will give them a firsthand look at the cutting-edge technologies and solutions driving the decarbonisation of the built environment. By engaging with industry experts, students will better understand how they can play a key role in shaping a sustainable future through their careers in green industries.

We would like to thank Adra for providing this opportunity for our students.”

This event is part of Tŷ Gwyrddfai’s ongoing commitment to working with the education sector and raising awareness about sustainable careers. By providing students with the knowledge and skills needed for green jobs, they aim to inspire the next generation of professionals in these fields.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the schools that participated and to our partners for their support in making this event a success. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future to continue shaping the future of green and construction jobs.
